CHAPTER TWELVE

“Who’s crazy Larry?” Sara asked as she handed her phone to Girard.

They just pulled into the hotel parking lot and sat in silence as he read Kimball’s latest message to them both.

There were only a few other cars in the parking lot. As Sara examined each out of habit, she noticed someone sitting in one of the vehicles beneath the pole light. She couldn’t make out if it were a woman or a man. It was just a shadow, but she made a mental note of the person sitting in the plain, beige, four-door sedan just the same.

Turning back to Girard, she waited for an answer while their vehicle let out a few loud ticks as it cooled.

“Larry is a friend of mine. And before you ask, no, I didn’t sleep with him. We had a few assignments together. He’s saved my life at least three times, and me his.”

Sara nodded, waiting for him to continue. But when he didn’t add anything else she had to ask, “and the crazy part?”

“Oh.” Girard chuckled. “Yeah. Well. He has a bit of a reputation of not following the rules. He’s gotten himself into some unusual situations by following his gut. Once he was able to crack a case by listening to his dream advisor.”

“His what?” Sara raised an eyebrow and waited for Girard to continue.

“His dream advisor. He swore up and down a man carrying a big walking stick would visit him in his dreams and tell him where to look and what to look for on the case we were working. None of us believed him. We all just assumed he had a confidential informant.”

Sara laughed.

“It gets better. We had to go testify about the case and he could not bring forth any informants. He had to sit on the stand and tell his story about his dream advisor. The judge thought he was nuts.”

“Did the unsub get off for a lack of real evidence then?”

“No. I covered for him and said I stumbled across the gun myself which was the one piece of evidence that actually put the man away.”

Girard ran his hand through his thick dark hair as he sat in the driver’s seat and looked at his reflection in the rear-view mirror before continuing.

“Larry actually thought the judge would buy his story about his dream advisor. He could have ruined the case, but thankfully the judge just ordered Larry to a month off with mandatory therapy and we continued to prosecute the man.”

“Is he mentally unstable?”

“No. He’s harmless. A creep sometimes, but he was just under a lot of stress back then. His wife had asked for a divorce, and it sent him reeling. He couldn’t think straight and came up with all these weird clues. The odd thing is, the clues were spot-on. If it hadn’t been for the dream advisor’s information, the unsub probably would have gotten away with raping and killing three college students.”

Girard shook his head and smiled at the memory before he continued.
